The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved a proposal to sign an agreement with Brazil to implement a sugarcane project, it has been revealed.

Sri Lanka initially entered into a Basic Technical Cooperation Agreement with Brazil on 16 September 2008, which aims to promote bilateral cooperation in mutually beneficial areas.

“According to the Basic Agreement on Technical Cooperation signed between Sri Lanka and Brazil, it is necessary to implement the programs and projects under it through complementary coordination agreements,” it has been announced.

Under the framework of the said Basic Agreement, specific programs and projects are required to be implemented through separate complementary coordination agreements.

At a cabinet meeting held in May, approval was given to sign a project cooperation agreement between the Brazilian Cooperation Agency, the Federal University of São Carlos, the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development of Sri Lanka, and the Sugarcane Research Institute.
