Let’s rally against the US that is preparing to plunder Venezuela – Sri Lanka Peace and Cooperation Council
SRI LANKA – AUGUST 17: People participate in a peace rally organized by the National Anti War Front (NAWF), Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo, Sri Lanka on Thursday, August 17, 2006. Sri Lankan forces repulsed an attack by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels in the northern Jaffna peninsula as part of the fiercest fighting since a 2002 truce halted the South Asian island’s two-decade civil war. The Sri Lanka Peace and Cooperation Council has issued a statement stating that the US is trying to overthrow the Venezuelan government and plunder its oil reserves and wealth.
The statement issued yesterday (04) under the signature of the Secretary General of the Sri Lanka Peace and Cooperation Council, Mr. Wilfred Jayasinghe, further states as follows.
The US is today trying to erase the example of the Bolivarian revolutionary struggle. The US is trying to take over the resources that the people of Venezuela have struggled for 26 years.
It is no secret that the United States has been trying to seize the resources of the Venezuelan people since before Hugo Chavez took office in 1999. The profits from Venezuela’s oil flowed to U.S. oil and other companies while 80% of the population lived in poverty.
That all changed with the rule of Chavez and the new Bolivarian Constitution of 1999. Since then, the benefits of Venezuela’s resources have flowed to the Venezuelan people. Poverty has ended. The oil industry has been nationalized and more than 5.5 million homes have been built. In this situation, the United States has imposed sanctions on the Venezuelan people, stolen the country’s resources, and the Trump administration has been working to kill people with bombs.
Now the United States is in direct war with Venezuela. Trump said, “The United States will control Venezuela.” This should be understood as a provocation not only to the people of Venezuela but to the entire region. Trump has already mentioned Cuba and Mexico, and has stated that the United States will act against anyone if they do not ally with imperialism. This announcement is a threat.
The people of Venezuela are taking to the streets today to defend the honor of their homeland. We, the Peace and Solidarity Council of Sri Lanka, condemn the aggressive war of the United States. We call on the peace-loving people, the anti-imperialist forces, to take the lead in protesting and condemning. We also call on the United States to come forward and demand that it leave Venezuela immediately.
