Sri Lanka will host an international donor conference in January 2026 to raise funds for rebuilding and reconstruction from the recent Ditwah devastation, Deputy Finance Minister Anil Jayantha Fernando said.
Sri Lanka is planning to spend an extra 500 billion rupees in Cyclone relief and recovery in 2026 of which 250 billion rupees will go for infrastructure, 100 billion rupees for destroying homes and 200 billion rupees for business recovery in agriculture and other industries.
Some of the funding will come from a cash buffer in the Treasury Operations Department, higher domestic taxes and the balance from foreign funding.
“Under the last Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund meeting, we decided to hold a donor conference in January,” Minister Fernando told reporters at a media briefing on Wednesday.
He said the international conference will be held in Sri Lanka and more details will be given later.
The United Nations Development Program launched a global appeal saying Sri Lanka’s Treasury is not able to pay for the disaster on its own.
The country is under an IMF loan and also has requested for a 200 million dollar from a Rapid Finance Instrument after the disaster. (Source -ECONOMYNEXT -Wednesday December 17, 2025)
