The legal case involving former intelligence chief Major General Suresh Sallay (Retd.), who is currently in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as a suspect in the Easter Sunday attack investigations, has taken a significant turn ahead of the next hearing set for 10 July.
Sallay, who is presently receiving treatment in hospital, has had over 600 pages of additional material filed on his behalf in support of his writ application by his legal counsel.
The newly filed documents include sworn testimony and evidence presented before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter Sunday attacks, chaired by Justice Janak de Silva, along with the sworn evidence given by His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.
According to the petitioner, this body of material offers a detailed picture of the circumstances surrounding the attacks, the investigations that preceded them, and the conduct, including alleged omissions, of senior CID officers at the time.
The petitioner further contends that the evidence points to those believed responsible for the attacks, while also exposing what are described as serious investigative failures and dereliction of duty on the part of certain senior officials.
The additional documents also include Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith’s evidence before the Commission, in which he emphasised the importance of ensuring that investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks are conducted independently and without political interference.
Following the submission of this additional material, several parties have since come forward seeking to intervene in the writ application.
These include Ven. Dimbulagala Rahulalankara Thero of Dimbulagala Maha Viharaya and Ven. Dapane Sumanawansa Thero of Sri Bodhimalu Viharaya in Gangodawila, the Global Sri Lanka Forum, the Patriotic National Movement, and Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Himi of Sri Pangnananda Dharmayathanaya together with Rev. Angulugalle Siri Jinanda Thero of Sri Wimalaramaya, Isurupura.
