Russia has accused Ukraine of attempting to assassinate President Vladimir Putin by launching a large-scale drone attack on a state residence linked to him in the Novgorod region overnight into December 29, a claim Kyiv has not commented on. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Ukrainian forces deployed 91 drones in the alleged strike, all of which were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defenses, and described the incident as a turning point in the conflict. Lavrov accused Ukraine of embracing what he called a policy of state terrorism and warned that Moscow would retaliate and revise its negotiating stance, signaling a tougher approach toward any future talks. The allegation, which could not be independently verified, comes amid escalating drone warfare between the two sides and raises fears of further intensification in the nearly three-year-old war.
