The death toll from the fire that broke out at the Gul Plaza shopping mall in Karachi, Pakistan, on the 23rd has now risen to over 70, with over 100 people still missing, Cyber World Press reports.
More than 1,000 shops in the mall have reportedly been destroyed in the fire. Shopkeepers have accused the government of taking more than 24 hours for the authorities to control the fire, according to media reports.
The fire that broke out on the first floor of the mall at around 10:00 pm on Saturday has been burning for 24 hours, and the entire five-storey building has been engulfed in flames as the city’s fire department failed to control the situation during that time, according to foreign media reports. City authorities have said that since the fire broke out, many bodies have been found during daily operations, and that operations will continue as more are reported missing. It is also reported that DNA samples are being collected from family members of the missing to identify the bodies that were burned beyond recognition.
