Mr. Santhush Jha, the High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka, has recently said that it is important for the Tamil parties in the north to come together and compete in one alliance for the provincial council elections to be held in the future.
Mr. A said this when the leaders of the Tamil parties in the Northern Province and the Eastern Province met at the Indian High Commissioner’s office in Colombo.
In this discussion, the High Commissioner has further said that many crises may arise in the future, and in the face of such a situation, it is more timely for the Tamil parties and the Muslim parties to come together in one alliance and compete.
The High Commissioner has indicated that even if it is not possible to compete unitedly, the current government can achieve some victories in the North. Mr. Santhush Jha has said that Tamil parties contesting the provincial council election together with any political unity can be more auspicious for the political future. Mr. A has further said that if it is not possible to compete in a united alliance for some political reason, it is more important to go for a united program in the establishment of power in the provinces after the election. The importance of holding such discussions and exchanging ideas has been pointed out.
Tamil party leaders have told the High Commissioner that the government has said that a constitutional amendment will be carried out after holding the provincial council elections.
The Tamil party leaders have also said that Minister Wimal Ratnayake said that after resolving the existing legal issues, the provincial council elections will be held within the first 6 months of next year.
“We held elections in 2025. We held elections in November in 2024. We hope to hold the provincial council elections in the first 6 months of next year. There are legal obstacles. We are trying to remove them.
We have a policy decision about bringing constitutions. Bringing the constitution is a comprehensive process. Our goal is to hold the provincial council elections before that. Provincial council elections will be held and a broad political program will be started on constitutional reform.” The Tamil party leaders have quoted a speech made by Minister of Education Wimal Ratnayake in Kilinochchi to the High Commissioner.
