Eric Meyer has stated before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Sri Lanka’s strategic location along major global shipping lanes is extremely important in the effort to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
This comes after President Donald Trump nominated Eric Meyer as the US ambassador to Sri Lanka.
Recently, Eric Meyer, while making a special statement to the country’s lawmakers regarding Sri Lanka, stated that Sri Lanka is currently trying to recover from the economic crisis that occurred in 2022 and the recent devastating cyclone. In this regard, the United States is prioritizing maritime security and economic reforms.
“Sri Lanka is located near some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean, and U.S. naval vessels and two-thirds of the world’s seaborne crude oil regularly transit its waters,” said Meyer. The United States also provided $2 million in emergency assistance in response to Cyclone Ditva, and also provided U.S. military strategic airlift capabilities to support relief efforts, recalling the strong and enduring U.S. partnership with Sri Lanka.
