A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the Ministry of Health on the 10th for a project to perform heart surgeries on 50 Sri Lankan children with heart disease at Amrita Hospital in Kochi, India.
More than a thousand children with heart disease are on the waiting list for surgery in the country, and this project is being implemented with the aim of reducing the waiting list for emergency heart surgeries, even though the facilities for heart surgery are available in the country.

This MoU was signed between the Ministry of Health and Mass Media and the Rotary Club of Colombo West, and the Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, and the President of the Rotary Club of Colombo West, K.P. Nagaraja, signed this MoU.
The Rotary Club of Colombo West and the Rotary Club of Kochi West are jointly providing funds for this through the Rotary Global Project.
Specialists and doctors at the Colombo Children’s Hospital select patients who need heart surgery on a priority basis from among the patients on the waiting list based on disease criteria.
Under the first phase, 60 children with heart disease in Sri Lanka were successfully operated on and brought back to the country two years ago, and based on that success, the second phase is being implemented as follows.
Under this project, local doctors and nurses will also be sent to Amrita Hospital in Kochi, India for training, and it is noteworthy that a team of specialists, doctors and staff from Amrita Hospital will come to Sri Lanka and implement training programs to identify children with heart disease while they are still in the womb.
