100 luxury electric buses from China to Sri Lanka

China will donate 100 luxury electric buses to Sri Lanka in a move aimed at reducing air pollution from fossil fuels, Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong said.

The fleet, valued at $225,000 per bus, is slated for operation in Kandy, Galle, and Colombo, the envoy said during a visit to the Chief Prelates of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters in Kandy.

Ambassador Qi met with Most Venerable Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thero and Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero, emphasizing China’s commitment to promoting electric vehicle adoption in the country.

“This initiative reflects our continued support for Sri Lanka’s sustainable development and environmental protection efforts,” Qi said.

The Chinese Ambassador also highlighted broader Chinese assistance in Sri Lanka.

Six Chinese experts are assessing roads and bridges damaged by Cyclone Ditha in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, and Badulla as part of ongoing infrastructure recovery efforts.

In the education sector, China provided 15 million meters of white uniform material for schoolchildren this year and has established 900 smart classrooms across 500 schools.

Furthermore, China continues to collaborate with the Sri Lankan government on economic stabilisation and modernization of the national highway system.

The electric bus donation and related initiatives are part of China’s wider engagement with Sri Lanka, combining environmental, educational, and infrastructure support to strengthen bilateral ties.
